Why I built Jobjam
Rohan Wakefield
Founder, Jobjam
15 years of doing this work
I’ve spent the last 15 years helping people get jobs. Preparing them, supporting them, and helping them make that jump into employment. Over the last 10 or 12 years, that’s been mostly in software development through Dev Academy, where I’ve worked with almost every graduate at some point on their path into work.
You start to see patterns when you’ve done it this long.
The bit no one teaches
Job hunting is almost never taught properly. It’s treated like something you just figure out, but it’s actually a skill, and a difficult one at that. I regularly see capable, talented people miss out on roles, not because they’re not good enough, but because they don’t know how to job hunt, or they’re relying on luck.
Good people miss out every day.
It’s not one thing
I know how to job hunt well, but it’s not a single trick or a silver bullet. It’s not just a great CV or being good at networking. It’s a collection of small things done properly. Positioning yourself well, talking to the right people, following up, and keeping momentum.
Getting a job isn’t one big thing. It’s 20 small things done well.
Treat it like a job
That’s what Jobjam is built around. We treat job hunting like a job in itself. We build your CV, your story, your confidence, and how you show up. Then we focus on getting you in front of the right people and turning that into real opportunities.
This isn’t theory. It’s doing the work that actually gets results.
Why I changed the model
I didn’t want to charge people upfront. Most people who are job hunting are already under pressure, and adding another cost with no guaranteed outcome didn’t sit right. At the same time, my time matters and I need to earn a living.
I only get paid when you get a result.
Keeping it honest
That model keeps things aligned. If you don’t succeed, I don’t succeed. So my job is to support you as well as I can and to keep going until something happens. If the model doesn’t work, I’ll change it, but the intention is simple.
You get a job you’re proud of. I get paid for helping you get there.
The bigger picture
In my previous businesses, I’ve always tried to build things that do more than just make money. Places that genuinely support people and focus on outcomes, not just transactions. This is no different. I want this to be a supportive, honest relationship where we’re both invested in the result.
This only works if it works for you.
How it works
A fair, practical way to get real support in your job hunt
- 1
The deal
We help you get a job. You only pay if it works. But this only works if you show up and do the work — it is a partnership.
- 2
What we do
We work with you to build a strong CV, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile, create a clear job search strategy, improve your interview skills, and keep you accountable throughout the process.
You go from amateur job hunter to professional job hunter.
- 3
What you do
You commit to building your job search assets, applying consistently, tracking your activity, attending check-ins, and practising interviews.
We back you hard, but we expect you to behave like someone serious about getting hired.

Stages
Stage 1. Join the next cohort — we have one cohort per month starting the first Monday in the month. This is the building, learning and preparing stage where you build your CV and cover letters. We go over how to network and reach out to the right companies and people. We practice managing the hiring processes from front to back and a lot of interviewing. This takes most people 1–2 weeks (about 40 hours of learning and prepping).
Stage 2. This is where you start applying and getting interviews. We help you manage the process and keep you accountable. Each week we check in and make sure you are making progress, you get feedback on your applications and interviews and we help you improve. Most people spend 10–20 hours a week doing this. This stage can take one month or 6 depending on your effort and a bit of luck.
- 5
Success fee
You only pay once you secure a role. It’s a simple, fair model that keeps both of us fully focused on getting you a result.
- 6 month plan: $6,000 — Paid over 6 months = $1,000 per month
- 12 month plan: $3,000 — Paid over 6 months = $500 per month
- No upfront cost
- No payment unless you succeed
- Paid in instalments after you get hired
- 6
If it doesn’t work
If you stay engaged, follow the process, and do the work, but do not get a job within your timeframe, you do not pay anything. You can also continue with support and only pay once you land a role.
- 7
Once you’re in, you’re covered
After you pay your success fee, you get 12 months of support. If your contract ends, you’re made redundant, or want a better role, we will help with the next role. No extra cost.
- 8
The bottom line
This is a partnership. We bring experience, structure, and support. You bring effort, consistency, and commitment. If both happen, this works.

Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about Jobjam coaching.
Getting Started
Jobjam is for people who want to take control of their job search. It’s suited to first time job seekers, career changers, and anyone feeling stuck, undervalued, or unsure what to do next. If you want a better role, more responsibility, or higher pay, this gives you the structure and support to make it happen.
You sign up, we have a call to talk through where you are at and what you want, we get you set up, and you begin the training and job search process straight away.
That’s common. We’ll help you get clear on direction early on so your job search isn’t scattered or reactive.
That’s fine. A big part of this programme is learning how to position what you do have so employers take you seriously.
Yes. Most people are applying without a clear strategy. This helps you stop guessing and start approaching your job search properly. In our experience most people are only touching the surface of the job market. There are so many opportunities that people never know about because they are not hunting properly.
Recruiters work for employers. We work for you. Our focus is helping you stand out, get interviews, and secure offers. We are not against recruiters though, they are great allies in the job hunt.
How It Works
Stage 1 is about building your core assets — your CV, applications, and interview skills. This is around 40 hours of focused work, which most people complete over one to two weeks full time, or part time over a longer period.
Stage 2 is where the job hunt begins. You’ll be reaching out to companies, growing your network, having conversations, applying for roles, interviewing, and negotiating offers.
The people who get the best results typically commit around 20 hours per week. You’ll have at least weekly check-ins with us, and can check in more regularly if you want additional support.
All coaching is online via video call, so you can join from anywhere in New Zealand. It’s flexible and designed to fit around your schedule.
No. We guide you, support you, but you need to do the applications. That’s where the real progress happens. You’re not on your own though, we will be there supporting you every step of the way
You’ll use a shared job tracker to log your applications and activity. This keeps everything structured and helps us make sure you’re moving forward.
That happens. We’ll help you get back on track. But you do need to put in a lot of effort and reengage, otherwise it may be treated as stepping away from the programme.
Your Job Search
Thats great! We’ll refine your CV so it actually gets attention and make sure it’s aligned with how employers are really hiring. We will also be evolving your CV as we go through the job hunt
Most people hate interviewing! That’s exactly what we work on. You’ll practise and improve so you go into interviews clear, confident, and prepared. You may even like them in the end!
It varies widely. People use Jobjam to land their first role, change careers, step up into more senior positions, or negotiate a salary increase. We also have people from all disciplines looking for very different positions, we try to help everyone to get where they want to go.
Yes. A big focus is helping you position yourself properly and interview well, which often leads to stronger offers and better salary outcomes. People often underestimate their worth and we give you the information and tools to be able to get your desired salary. Something to understand is that starting a job on a $10k higher salary after 10 years is $100k, that can be life changing.
Payment & Terms
No. There’s no upfront cost. You only pay a success fee once you secure a job.
Yes. Once you secure a job, you can pay the success fee over 6 months. That’s $1,000 per month on the 6-month plan, or $500 per month on the 12-month plan.
If you stay engaged, follow the process, and don’t get a job within your timeframe, you don’t pay anything. You can also choose to continue with support and only pay once you land a role.
You can stop at any time. If you leave before receiving a job offer, you’ll only pay based on how far you’ve progressed: $500 within the first 7 days, $1,000 within the first 14 days, and 50% of your success fee after that. If you receive a job offer after joining the programme, the success fee applies instead. We’ve tried to keep this as fair and simple as possible. If you decide to leave early, you only pay based on how far you’ve progressed. But if the programme results in a job offer, the success fee applies. That keeps things clear for both of us and reflects the value created through the work we’ve done together.
That’s great. If you secure a job after joining, the success fee still applies. The preparation, positioning, and interview work you’ve done all contribute to that outcome.
There’s no upfront cost, so there’s nothing to refund. If you leave before receiving a job offer, you’ll only pay based on how far you’ve progressed. If you receive a job offer after joining the programme, the success fee applies. We’ve tried to keep this as fair and simple as possible. If you decide to leave early, you only pay based on how far you’ve progressed. But if the programme results in a job offer, the success fee applies. That keeps things clear for both of us and reflects the value created through the work we’ve done together.
Results & Outcomes
Most people who stay engaged and do the work start getting traction within a few months. They will be meeting people, talking to organisations, networking, applying and getting feedback. The job hunting activity builds and people start to get interviews and offers after a couple of months, often landing roles within 4 to 6 months. Job hunting is tough and it does need time and effort, but you are in safe hands, We’ve helped over 1,500 people secure roles.
Some people see traction quickly, others take longer. The people who get results are the ones who can put in the time, stay consistent and do the work.
Part of our commitment to your career is that we will support you in your onboarding, salary reviews and navigating any career conversations or progression. This includes negotiating a pay rise or getting another job. You’ll continue to get support for 12 months from your contract start.
